Tip Calculator – Tip, Total & Bill Split

Calculating a tip under time pressure — especially when splitting among a group with different orders — is surprisingly easy to get wrong. This tip calculator eliminates the guesswork: enter the bill, choose a tip percentage (or type your own), and instantly see the tip amount, total bill, and each person's share.

It handles everything from simple 2-person splits to complex group dinners, and lets you round each person's payment up to a clean number when cash is involved. No app download, no login — just open and use.

How to use the Tip Calculator

  1. Enter the bill total.
  2. Choose a tip percentage or enter a custom amount.
  3. Enter the number of people splitting the bill.
  4. View tip amount, total bill, and per-person share. Optionally round up.

Tip Calculator FAQ

What is the standard tip percentage in the U.S.?
15% is considered the minimum for adequate service; 18% is more common for good service; 20% is now widely regarded as the standard. 22–25% or more is appropriate for exceptional service.
Should I tip on pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Either is acceptable. Technically, the pre-tax amount is the standard, but tipping on the post-tax total (the number at the bottom of the bill) is simpler and common practice. The difference is small.
What is the fastest way to calculate 20% tip mentally?
Move the decimal point one place left (10%), then double it. For a $47 bill: 10% = $4.70, doubled = $9.40 tip.
Are tips mandatory?
In the U.S., tips are voluntary but socially expected in service industries. Many service workers earn a lower tipped minimum wage (as low as $2.13/hour federally) and depend on tips as the majority of their income.
