GPA Calculator – Grade Point Average by Course & Credit Hour

Your Grade Point Average (GPA) is the weighted average of grade points earned across all courses, where each course's weight is determined by its credit hours. A 3-credit-hour A counts for three times as much as a 1-credit-hour A. Understanding exactly how your GPA is calculated helps you prioritise which courses to focus on and track your progress toward academic goals.

This GPA calculator handles unlimited courses, supports both semester and cumulative calculations, and includes a 'target GPA' mode that tells you exactly what grades you need in remaining courses to reach your goal. It uses the standard U.S. 4.0 scale.

How to use the Gpa Calculator

  1. Add each course with its credit hours and letter grade.
  2. View your semester GPA updating in real time.
  3. For cumulative GPA: enter your prior GPA and credit hours.
  4. Use target mode to find what grades you need in remaining courses.

Gpa Calculator FAQ

What is a good GPA?
Generally, 3.5–4.0 is considered excellent (Dean's List level). 3.0 is typically the minimum for most graduate school applications. For medical school, aim for 3.7+ science GPA.
How do weighted and unweighted GPA differ?
Unweighted GPA treats all classes equally on the 4.0 scale. Weighted GPA (common in high school) awards extra points for AP, IB, or honours courses — often 0.5 or 1.0 additional grade points.
How do I raise my GPA?
Focus on high-credit courses since they move the needle most. Grade replacement (retaking and replacing a D or F) is available at many schools. Acing remaining courses has the biggest impact early in your college career when you have fewer completed credits.
Does a failing grade affect my GPA permanently?
At most schools, an F earns 0 grade points but the credit hours still count in the denominator. Grade forgiveness or replacement policies allow re-taken courses to replace the F in the GPA calculation at many institutions.
