Army Body Fat Calculator – U.S. Army Tape Test Formula

The U.S. Army uses a circumference-based tape test to estimate body fat percentage as part of its Army Physical Fitness standards. Unlike BMI (which uses only height and weight), the tape test accounts for body shape by measuring neck and waist circumference — making it more informative for assessing fitness rather than just overall weight.

This calculator applies the official Army regulation formula to estimate your body fat percentage. It then compares your result against Army body fat standards by age group and sex, so you can quickly see whether you'd meet the requirement.

How to use the Army Body Fat Calculator

  1. Measure neck circumference at the narrowest point (just below the larynx for men).
  2. Measure waist at the navel (men) or narrowest point (women).
  3. Women also measure hip circumference at the widest point.
  4. Enter height and all measurements. View your body fat % and Army standard comparison.

Army Body Fat Calculator FAQ

How accurate is the Army tape test?
Studies show the Army method correlates reasonably well with DEXA scans (accurate to ±3–5%), though it can overestimate body fat in muscular individuals and underestimate in those with centralised fat distribution.
What happens if a soldier fails the tape test?
Soldiers who exceed Army weight tables are taped. Those whose body fat % exceeds the standard are enrolled in the Army Body Composition Program (ABCP) and given time to meet standards, with potential administrative consequences for non-compliance.
Is the Army tape test the same as the Navy method?
They use the same circumference measurements but slightly different equations. The Navy method is widely used for civilians; the Army regulation uses its own official formula.
What is the Army weight for height standard?
Soldiers must first meet Army weight tables based on height. If they exceed the tabulated weight, they undergo the tape test. Meeting the body fat standard is an alternative path to compliance.
