Alcohol Calorie Calculator – Calories in Beer, Wine & Spirits

Alcohol is calorie-dense (7 kcal per gram — nearly as much as fat) and those calories are often invisible because they come with no nutritional value and don't affect satiety. A night out with a few drinks can easily add 500–800 unplanned calories without feeling like a meal.

This calculator estimates the calories in any alcoholic drink based on volume and alcohol by volume (ABV) percentage. It covers beer, wine, cocktails, spirits, and cider — enter the exact details of what you're drinking for an accurate count rather than relying on rough averages.

How to use the Alcohol Calorie Calculator

  1. Select the drink type or enter a custom ABV %.
  2. Enter the serving size in ml or fl oz.
  3. View calories per drink, and optionally add multiple drinks for a session total.

Alcohol Calorie Calculator FAQ

Where do alcohol calories come from?
Ethanol (alcohol) contains 7 calories per gram. Beer and wine also contain carbohydrate calories from residual sugars. Spirits are mostly alcohol calories. Mixers like juice or soda add additional sugar calories.
Why are alcohol calories worse than food calories?
The body prioritises metabolising alcohol over everything else, so fat burning stops while alcohol is present. Alcohol also lowers inhibitions around food choices and often stimulates appetite.
Does drinking alcohol slow metabolism?
Temporarily yes. The liver processes alcohol at about one standard drink per hour, and during that time, it halts fat oxidation. Heavy drinking can also disrupt sleep, which indirectly affects metabolism.
What is a standard drink?
In the US, one standard drink contains 14 grams of pure alcohol: a 12oz beer at 5% ABV, a 5oz glass of wine at 12% ABV, or a 1.5oz shot of 80-proof spirits.
