Acceleration is the rate at which an object's velocity changes over time — it's what you feel when a car speeds up, a plane takes off, or a roller coaster drops. Acceleration Calculator FAQ

What is the difference between acceleration and velocity?
Velocity is how fast an object moves in a specific direction (a vector). Acceleration is how fast the velocity changes. An object moving at constant velocity has zero acceleration.
What units does acceleration use?
The SI unit is metres per second squared (m/s²). In Imperial units it's feet per second squared (ft/s²). Acceleration due to Earth's gravity is 9.81 m/s², often called 1g.
Can acceleration be negative?
Yes — negative acceleration (deceleration) means the object is slowing down. If you're moving forward and braking, acceleration is negative in the direction of motion.
What is centripetal acceleration?
Objects moving in a circle experience centripetal (centre-directed) acceleration even at constant speed, because the direction of velocity is always changing. a = v²/r, where r is the radius of the circle.
